Palestrante: Claudiu T. Supuran
Resumo do Palestrante: Claudiu T. Supuran is full professor of medicinal chemistry at University of Florence, since 1995. He was a visiting professor in various universities in USA, Australia, Argentina, Brasil and other countries. His main research interest is the medicinal chemistry/biochemistry of carbonic anhydrases (CAs), field in which he has made contributions to the design of many novel classes of enzyme inhibitors and activators, deciphering their mechanism of action at molecular level, discovery of a new CA genetic family (the -CAs), of new isoforms and their role in disease (cancer, obesity, epilepsy, neuropathic pain, arthritis, cerebral ischemia), as well as the discovery of new such enzymes from bacteria, fungi, corals, sponges, vertebrates, etc. Other research interests include X-ray crystallography of metalloenzymes in complex with inhibitors/activators. One of the sulfonamide CA inhibitors discovered in his laboratory (SLC-0111) is currently in Phase II clinical trials for the management of metastatic, hypoxic tumors. His H index is 150, he has published more than 1800 papers and 6 books in these fields, and is Editor‐in‐Chief of many journals, among which of Expert Opinion on Therapeutic Patents, Journal of Enzyme Inhibition and Medicinal Chemistry, Current Enzyme Inhibition.
