He holds a degree in Microbiology and Immunology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2000), a Master’s in Science (Microbiology) from the same institution (2003), and a PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Biology from the University of Helsinki (2006, Finland). He was a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Chemical Engineering at COPPE/UFRJ (2007), at East Carolina University (North Carolina, USA – 2008-2010), and a visiting researcher at the University of Torino, Italy (2018-2019).
He is currently an Assistant Professor at IMPG/UFRJ and Principal Investigator at the Anaerobic Biology Laboratory in the Department of Medical Microbiology. He has experience in the field of Microbiology, with an emphasis on medical bacteriology, primarily focusing on the following topics: pathogen-host interactions and the role of the intestinal microbiota in health and disease, probiotics, prebiotics, strict anaerobes as opportunistic pathogens, pathogenicity and mechanisms of adherence and biofilm formation in strict anaerobic bacteria, and antimicrobial resistance in strict anaerobic bacteria.
