He holds a degree in Medicine from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) (1990) and a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology from FIOCRUZ (1998). He was a research fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health (1994-1996). He is a Full Professor and Head of the Department of Immunology at UFRJ. He contributed to the creation and coordinated the graduate program in Immunology and Inflammation (UFRJ) from 2012 to 2016. He is internationally recognized for his contributions to the understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms associated with tissue damage and pathogen resistance, discoveries that may lead to new therapies for inflammatory and infectious diseases. He was awarded the Capes-Sorbonne Université Chair (2015/2016 at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris) and the Fulbright Scholar Award (2018/2019 at the New York School of Medicine) to serve as a professor and researcher.
