André Santos has a technical degree in Biotechnology (Federal Technical School of Chemistry-RJ, 1990-1994), a Bachelor’s in Biological Sciences: Microbiology and Immunology (March 1994 to February 1999) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), a Master’s (March 1999 to May 2000), and a Ph.D. (June 2000 to March 2002) in Science (Microbiology) from UFRJ.
He is currently a Full Professor in the Department of General Microbiology at the Paulo de Góes Institute of Microbiology (IMPG) at UFRJ, a Level 1A Productivity Fellow at CNPq, a Scientist of Our State (CNE) by FAPERJ, the Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Science (Microbiology) at IMPG-UFRJ (CAPES rating 7), a member of the CNPq Microbiology and Parasitology Advisory Committee (CA-MP), and the coordinator of the Mycology area at the Brazilian Society of Microbiology (SBM). He served as the Department Head from July 2018 to May 2020.
He coordinates the Laboratory of Advanced Studies on Emerging and Resistant Microorganisms (LEAMER) and has expertise in Microbiology, with an emphasis on Mycology and Parasitology. His research primarily focuses on the effect of proteolytic inhibitors and coordination compounds on the cellular biology and virulence of pathogenic microorganisms, with the aim of proposing new therapies for resistant species.
