He is an Assistant Professor of Bacteriology in the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology at the Biomedical Institute of the Federal University of Fluminense (UFF). He is a Permanent Advisor for the Graduate Programs in Marine Biotechnology (PPGBM – IEAPM/UFF) and Applied Microbiology and Parasitology (PPGMPA/UFF). Since 2024, he has been a Young Scientist of Our State (JCNE) supported by FAPERJ and has been awarded a project funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR, USA Navy) since 2023.
He holds a Bachelor’s in Biomedicine (2012) and a Master’s in Parasite-Host Biology (2015), both from the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), and a Ph.D. in Science (Microbiology) (2020) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), with a sandwich period in Applied Microbiology at University College Cork (Cork, Ireland). He was an Assistant Professor (Substitute) in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Institute of Biological Sciences at UFG (2015-2016). He completed his postdoctoral research in Applied Microbiology at UFRJ (2020-2021).
Since 2021, he has founded and coordinates (P.I.) the Marine Bacteriome Laboratory (BacMar), the first at UFF focused exclusively on Marine Microbiology studies. His research group is particularly dedicated to characterizing the diversity, genomics, and biotechnological potential of prokaryotic microbiomes associated with marine holobionts, with a focus on the macroalga host.
He is an Editor for Microbial Genomics (Microbiology Society) and Ocean Microbiology (BMC – Springer Nature), and a Reviewing Editor for Microbiology Resource Announcements (ASM). He serves as a Society Champion and an elected member of the Prokaryotic Division (ProkD) of the Microbiology Society, and is a member of the International Marine Biotechnology Association (IMBA) and Applied Microbiology International (AMI). He is also a co-founder and coordinator of the Pride in Microbiology Network since 2023, a global network dedicated to establishing mentorship and promoting justice and belonging for LGBTQIA+ members in all areas of Microbiology.
His expertise includes Microbiology and Biotechnology, with a focus on Marine Microbiology and Microbial Biotechnology. His work particularly focuses on: marine bacteriology, bioprospecting of cultivable bacterial diversity, discovery of new antimicrobial/antivirulence agents, microbial ecology, carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) involved in marine polysaccharide catabolism, microbial enzymology, microbiology of macroalgae and sponges, and bacterial genomic and pan-genomic mining.
