Frederico Alisson da Silva

He holds a degree in Biological Sciences – Microbiology and Immunology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2006), a Master’s degree in Biological Sciences (Biophysics) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2009), a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences (Biophysics) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2013), and a sandwich Ph.D. from the School of Medicine – University of California San Diego (2012). He completed his Postdoctoral research at the School of Medicine – University of California San Diego (2013-2016). He is currently an Adjunct Professor II at the Institute of Microbiology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He has experience in Immunology, Cell Biology, and Microbiology, with an emphasis on Glycobiology. His main ongoing research lines aim to: (i) study whether non-human carbohydrates present in red meat contribute to the fact that the consumption of this type of meat increases the risk of colon cancer in humans; (ii) evaluate whether the evolutionary loss of a gene involved in protein glycosylation influences the profile of autoreactivity of natural and/or pathogenic antibodies in humans; (iii) understand how glucose metabolism and hyperglycemia in diabetic patients influence the anti-tumor immune response in colon cancer. He supervises master’s and Ph.D. students in the Graduate Program in Immunology and Inflammation at the Institute of Microbiology Paulo de Góes at UFRJ, and he is a Young Scientist of Our State awarded by FAPERJ (2021).
