Herbert Leonel de Matos Guedes is an Associate Professor at the Paulo de Góes Institute of Microbiology – Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IMPG/UFRJ) and a public health researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute – Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (IOC/FIOCRUZ). He is a CNPq Productivity Fellow (level 1D) and a Scientist of Our State/FAPERJ. He holds a degree in Pharmacy from UFRJ (2000-2003), completed his Master’s (2003-2005) and PhD (2005-2009) at the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics (with part of the PhD undertaken at the University of Glasgow, Scotland/UK, and at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, NY/US), and completed his postdoctoral research at the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Herbert is the leader of the IMMUNOLOGY AND VACCINOLOGY research group. He is the head of the Immunobiotechnology Laboratory at IMPG/UFRJ and the head of the Clinical Immunology Laboratory at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/FIOCRUZ). His research lines include: 1) Development of vaccines against leishmaniasis; 2) Evaluating the importance of serine proteases of Leishmania spp. for survival, nutrition, and infection; 3) Development of new therapies for leishmaniasis using immunotherapy and stem cells; 4) Development of vaccines against emerging viruses. In undergraduate education, he coordinates the Immunobiologics course and participates in Microbiology and Immunology courses. At the postgraduate level, he is linked to: I) The postgraduate program in Biological Sciences (Biophysics – permanent faculty), teaching the Immunobiology of Leishmaniasis course and collaborating on the Introduction to Immunology and Immune System course; II) The postgraduate program in Immunology and Inflammation (permanent faculty), where he coordinates the Vaccinology: Old and New Concepts course, the Dendritic Cells course, and the Macrophages in Health and Disease course; III) The postgraduate program in Cell and Molecular Biology at IOC/Fiocruz, where he collaborates on the Immunology course.
