She holds a degree in Biomedicine (1996) from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, a Master’s in Biological Sciences (Microbiology) (1998), and a PhD in Sciences (Microbiology) (2003) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Fiocruz, Brazil (2003-2004), and at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium (2012-2014). She is a Full Professor (2023) at UFRJ, where she was appointed through a public competition in 2004. She is a Scientist of Our State/FAPERJ (since 2017) and a CNPq Researcher (since 2016). She was elected (2022-2031) as a member of the International Marine Biotechnology Association (IMBA-USA).
Currently, she coordinates research activities at the Molecular and Marine Bacteriology Laboratory at the Institute of Microbiology at UFRJ, where she supervises undergraduate and graduate students. Her research focuses on microbial diversity in natural and human-impacted aquatic ecosystems (freshwater, coastal waters, marine caves, and sediments); symbioses between microorganisms and marine animals; prospecting for antimicrobial and heavy metal resistance genes in aquatic bacteria; and exploring microbial metabolic diversity for biotechnological purposes, such as antimicrobial molecules, antibiofilms, enzymes, and biosurfactants. The symbiotic relationship between bacteria and their hosts (sponges) and the aquatic environment they inhabit is the primary focus of her research group.
