Maulori Curié Cabral

He holds a degree in Pharmacy and Biochemistry from UFRN (1973), a Master’s (1976), and a Ph.D. (1986) in Sciences (Microbiology) from UFRJ. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Virology at the Paulo de Góes Institute of Microbiology, UFRJ.

In the last five years, his undergraduate activities have focused on teaching Virology for Nursing and Biology students in on-campus courses, as well as teaching Microbiology in the Distance Biology program linked to CEDERJ, both as a content developer and course coordinator.

Regarding research activities, he has experimental expertise in the following areas:

  1. Basic Virology, covering arboviruses (Chikungunya, Dengue, Yellow Fever, and Zika), influenza, and phenomena related to interferons and vaccine-induced responses;

  2. Antiseptics, focusing on studies of the mechanisms of action of Poly-Hexa-Methylene-Biguanide (PHMB) molecules as cationic germicidal agents;

  3. Nucleotide analogs as antibiotics.

In the field of outreach activities, he promotes knowledge through lectures and workshops on:

  1. The advantages of PHMB-based cationic antiseptics for hospital use;

  2. The popularization of Microbiology and Virology in primary and secondary schools;

  3. Strategies for eradicating Aedes aegypti mosquitoes using the lethal mosquito trap known as “mosquitérica,” which serves as an educational and motivational tool to encourage civic engagement among the population;

  4. He coordinates ProAlga at UFRJ, an extension group dedicated to making Brazil self-sufficient in marine algae-derived products and contributing to increased agricultural and livestock production nationwide.
