Pedro Paulo Xavier Elsas

Pedro Paulo Xavier Elsas holds a degree in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) (1979), a Master’s in Biological Sciences (Biophysics) from UFRJ (1981), and a Ph.D. in Sciences (Microbiology) from UFRJ (1990).

His international training includes a Research Fellowship at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA (1981-1984, Pathology and Medicine), as well as research periods at the Centre d’Immunologie INSERM-CNRS in Marseille-Luminy (Marseille, France) and Roche Research Gent (Ghent, Belgium). He also spent a sabbatical year (2005) as a Visiting Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Currently, he is a Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He has held a research productivity fellowship from CNPq for the past two decades and was recognized as a Cientista do Nosso Estado by the Carlos Chagas Filho Research Support Foundation (FAPERJ) from 2011 to 2014.

He has experience in the field of Immunology, with an emphasis on Immunopathology, working mainly on the following topics: hematopoiesis, cytokines, eosinophils, and allergy. He serves as a referee for numerous international journals and is currently a member of the editorial boards of Frontiers in Pharmacology, Frontiers in Medicine, Frontiers in Public Health, and the COVID-19 Task Force at Frontiers.org.

Additionally, he conducts studies on the History of Science, focusing on the History of Immunology and its impact on society.
