Sérgio Eduardo Longo Fracalanzza

He holds a degree in Pharmaceutical Biochemistry from the São Paulo State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho (1973), a Master’s degree in Sciences (Microbiology) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1980), and a PhD in Sciences (Microbiology) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1986). Since February 2015, he has been a Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He has experience in the field of Microbiology, with an emphasis on Medical and Applied Microbiology, mainly focusing on the following topics: epidemiology, phenotypic and genotypic characterization, and susceptibility to antimicrobials of bacterial pathogens such as Streptococcus agalactiae and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, as well as phenotypic characterization and antifungal testing of Candida spp. species.

Main responsibilities:

  • Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ);

  • Rector (2003) and Vice-Rector (2002) of UFRJ;

  • Dean of the Center for Health Sciences (CCS-UFRJ) (1998-2002);

  • Member of the editorial board of the journal Revista de Microbiologia;

  • Member of the Advisory Committee of the funding agency FAPESP.

Awards and titles:

  • Best poster award at the 2nd International Symposium on Clinical Microbiology, Brazilian Society of Microbiology (2010);

  • Emeritus Collaborator of the Army – Eastern Military Command (2012).
